One of the features on Bandcamp Daily that generates the greatest amount of enthusiasm is Big Ups. The concept is simple: we ask artists who used Bandcamp to recommend their favorite Bandcamp discoveries. So, in honor of our Best of 2017 coverage, we decided to take Big Ups and super-size it. The Best Albums of 2017: #60 – 41

We’ll be revealing the full list, 20 albums at a time, this whole week.

Last year, the Bandcamp Daily staff put together our first “Best Albums of the Year List,” 100 albums we felt defined 2016 for us. At the time I remember thinking, “This is tough, but it will probably get easier as the years go on.” Now, one year later, I’m realizing that I was wrong. The truth is, the world of Bandcamp is enormous, and it contains artists from all over the world, in every conceivable genre (including a few who exist in genres of their own invention), and at every stage of their career. The fact of the matter is, any list like this is going to fall short because, on Bandcamp, there is always more to discover. Right now, there’s probably someone in their bedroom in Buenos Aires, making a record on their computer that is going to end up on next year’s list. So as comprehensive as we’ve tried to make this list, we realize that, even at 100 albums, we’re only scratching the surface of what’s available. The albums that made this list, though, were the ones that stayed with us long after they were released—the ones we returned to again and again and found their pleasures undimmed, and their songs still rewarding. These are the Best Albums on Bandcamp in 2017.

Album of the Day: Weaves, “Wide Open”

In just five short years, Weaves have become one of Canada’s most renowned indie rock bands, their debut full-length album earning prestigious nominations for both the Polaris Music Prize and the Juno Awards. Little more than a year later, the Toronto quartet returns with Wide Open, a contemplative, expertly-crafted follow-up that greatly expands the band’s sonic spectrum without abandoning their core pop punk ethos.

The band has referred to their latest offering as its “Americana” record, a comparison that starts to make sense when it’s not taken literally. Indeed, Wide Open is a record that gathers disparate influences and styles, including a variety of roots-indebted sounds, and merges them into a surprisingly cohesive whole: the infectious power pop of “Walkaway,” the album’s centerpiece; the experimental jazz stylings of “Scream,” which features Tanya Tagaq; the Tom Petty-esque heartland rock of “Grass;” and the gentle bedroom folk that begins “Puddle.”

OLead singer Jasmyn Burke has also sharpened her focus as a songwriter, which is most apparent on socially-conscious anthems like “Wide Open” and “Scream.” “We are living in a time when misery is just common circumstance,” she sings on the latter. “I am frozen, I’m sublime, I am searching for some fresh watermelons.” Whether they’re incorporating fresh sounds or crafting newly-inspired punk didactics, Weaves has never sounded as self-assured, or as resolutely urgent, as they do on Wide Open.

We can all learn something from Weaves, a Toronto quartet with music so alive and confounding that you’re unsure where it’ll land. They work on the fly and let themselves make mistakes, crafting a versatile sound that blends pop, R&B and classic rock. The results are fresh, surprising and impossible to forget.

Featuring vocalist Jasmyn Burke, guitarist Morgan Waters, drummer Spencer Cole, and bassist Zach Bines, Weaves formed in 2013 after Burke and Waters met at the Holy Oak Café in Toronto. After releasing a few singles and a critically-acclaimed six-song EP in 2014, their self-titled debut album is a snapshot of controlled anarchy, a captivating blast that demands attention.
