Dear Mrs. Obama,
I’m delighted to hear that you and your husband will be spending a week in Austin with us at SXSW. I’m sure you’ll be very busy and likely whisked away to meet with foreign dignitaries the moment the applause ends at your keynote. However, I’d like to propose something a little different: take off those fabulous Diane Von Furstenberg dresses and sweaters, pop on a disguise and go on a Roman Holiday in Austin. Let’s move!
I’ve heard in numerous interviews that you love music, and based on your Girl Power Playlist, you love impassioned, upbeat female vocals. I’m sure Malia and Sasha have strong opinions of their own but please allow me to recommend a few artists to check out during your SXSW experience.
After your important keynote, I’d suggest just calling it a night. On Thursday, grab some breakfast tacos at Torchy’s before heading to your first show. The orange hot sauce makes a great gift.
A Personalized SXSW Schedule for Michelle Obama:
Thursday, March 17th, 12:40pm
Pitchfork is throwing an impressive showcase, and I think you’ll love KING. The voices of the women in this electro-soul trio rise high above the soft piano, beats and finger-snaps. You’ll love the track “Supernatural” off their album We Are King. It’s perfect for long flights on Air Force One.
Then at 2pm, hop on over to this panel at the convention center: Advocating for Musicians: Why DC Matters. I hope you’ll find it fascinating. Artists struggle to ensure they are paid for their work, and government can help. This panel promises to explore changes in current laws and policies that will make royalty collection and international touring more artist-friendly.
Friday, March 18th, 12pm
I know that keeping America healthy is close to you heart. As you know, the Japanese are extremely concerned with nutrition, and this band name reflects that: Japanese Breakfast. Singer and songwriter Michelle Zauner’s talents shine on the album Psychopomp, out April 1st. It’s a festival of pop music that will make you want to get up dance.
Saturday, March 19th, 2pm
Okay, so, Bo is sort of a poodle right? This band Pookie and the Poodlez is phenomenal. If you close your eyes and squint, they sound like a punky interpretation of The Shangri-Las.
This is just a small sample of the hundreds of artists swarming Austin for SXSW, but I hope you’ll have time to catch at least one show. If you like what you hear, download the Bandcamp app on your smartphone and purchase the albums of the artists you’ve seen live. Can you imagine if running government were as easy as using Bandcamp to appropriate funds to the causes you believe in?
