With the Covid-19 pandemic decimating live music and shuttering record shops, many artists have found merch and digital sales to be a last remaining financial lifeline as they confront a very real threat to their livelihoods. So, it’s more important than ever for fans to support musicians by purchasing from them directly. Today, Bandcamp is waiving our revenue share on all sales, and we’re being joined by many artists and labels coming together to support the music community in this time of unprecedented need.
The list below includes everything from labels donating 100% of sales revenue to artists, to bands putting up t-shirts made for cancelled tours, to artists pledging to all proceeds to local food banks, to independent musicians dropping surprise new projects. While reality is undeniably dire, let music be a comfort if you can. Fill up your wishlist. Be curious. Listen to an artist you’ve never heard from a country you’ve never visited. Buy records for loved ones who are far away. Know you’re truly helping people who need help—that goes for all of us, musicians and listeners alike. Music can be a way of connecting with each other for however long we must remain apart. Seeing how quickly the global music community has banded together is a spark of light in the encroaching darkness. The world isn’t going silent. It is up to us to ensure that it never does.
Our responsibility does not end after today or even when the pandemic is over. The shared human art of music will endure these terrible times, of this I am sure. It has endured every terrible thing that’s ever happened, after all. But what shape it will take is entirely in our hands. I hope that the beautiful outpouring of mutual aid in the music community during these days of despair will inspire people everywhere to make a strong commitment to support music and the artists who make it, not just for now, but forever. Music, we love you!
